Mack the Knife - Walden Robert Cassotto

Walden Robert Cassotto!?!? What kind of a name is Walden, Robert, or Cossotto for a pop singer, especially when you put them all together? Well, apparently Walden or someone in his close company suggested the same thing as he took on the name Bobby Darin for his time in the spotlight. His name change happened early in his career before he married Sandra Dee. It also happened before he learned that he was raised by his grandparents, not his real parents...which happened at the same time he learned that the person he knew growing up as his sister was actually his mother. Let's say these events had a traumatic effect on Bobby, as I think they would anyone. He had it rough. I've got another post of a song of Darin's. It's performed by Kevin Spacey who portrayed Darin the biopic film, Beyond the Sea. If you're really interested in the events I mentioned above, check out that film. It's very well made with an excellent cast.

The song was written by Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht. Originally written as part of their musical drama, The Threepenny Opera, the song made it's premier with the production in 1928. It was later picked up by many artists in the US and the UK and recorded many, many times. Artists that have recorded the song include Bing Crosby, Ella Fitzgerald, and Bill Haley. It wasn't until 1959 that Darin would record the song and take it to #1.
