Time of the Season - The Zombies

There are certain songs that capture a magic in their recording. That magic, whether it be a combination of musicians, writing, music, producing, etc., or just one of those things, is often hard to catch again. This is one of those songs for me. This recording has a very specific sound and feel. I've heard lots of covers of the song, but none really come close to this one. Even live versions by this group lack some of the mojo you get with the studio version. The song is performed almost note-for-note the same way in many cases, but it just doesn't have the same funk attached to it.

Don't be confused, though! Today's music can often land in the same description: live versions not living up to their studio counterparts. However, this isn't necessarily...no, I'll say usually it has little to do with magic and everything to do with over-producing the song. Contemporary country music is some of the worst. In a newer country song, you'll hear layers of guitar tracks underneath of auxiliary tracks (banjo, mandolin, etc.) that you'd have to have twenty people on stage to duplicate. It's not realistic. I'm not totally against this, but it seems so much the norm anymore. It's like the music, and not just country, isn't good enough to stand on its own.

Let's go back to trying to capture that magic...
