Dead or Alive - Bon Jovi

In 2003, Bon Jovi set out to re-record some of their biggest hits in a all new styles. Often times artists try this with little to no success in actually making the songs sound different. Although the album wasn't all that successful, the band definitely succeeded in making the songs sound completely different from the original takes.

This song is a weird, syncopated version of the original. While I like what they did here, the music and lyrics don't fit the same tone like they did in the original take. It all works together here, but the first cut of the song captures that old west feel. I don't think it holds the same tone here. It has this weird, post-modern vibe, like they just wanted to be artsy with it. Of course, it might have something to do with Jon's aging vocals, too, not being able to performing the screaming notes he once could.

Comparing his and the band's lifestyle to that of his old west heroes, Jon said they're similar because they're "a young band of thieves, riding into town, stealing the money, the girls, and the booze before the sun came up". Jon also claims that the tune was inspired in part by Bob Seger's "Turn the Page". The song clinched a #7 spot for the band on the Hot 100.
