Hey Now - Red Garland

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=It-h7D6wqos]

There are lots of examples of artists who begin there career on one instrument but later switch to another. One of the more prominent examples that comes to mind is Steven Tyler of Aerosmith fame who began his musical career as a drummer and chose to switch to vocals when the band couldn't find a vocalist. Garland is one of those cases, too.

Garland was born in Dallas, TX in 1923 and began his music endeavors on clarinet and alto sax. His mother played several instruments, and Garland had his choice of where to start. It wasn't until 1940 that he made the switch to the piano. This wasn't the only change that Garland made, though, attempting a short career as a boxer and fighting a young Sugar Ray Robinson at one point.

This song is exactly the kind of jazz I dig. It's smooth, but it isn't down tempo. That brush sound on the drums is soothing, but the walking bass doesn't lose your interest. I could listen to this style of jazz all day.
