Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley and His Comets

First, the band his often referred to as "Bill Haley and the Comets", but actually, their "His Comets". Secondly, this, the song that is more-oft than any other as credited with being the song that brought rock and roll into the mainstream (despite not being the first rock and roll album nor the first successful one of the genre as is also oft believed), was originally recorded by Sonny Dae and His Knights. One of the song's writers (James E. Myers) insists that the song was originally written for Haley, but due to time constraints, couldn't be recorded by him when completed. Haley's recording came less than thirty days after Dae's and was obviously far more successful.

The song was also used as the theme song for "Happy Days" during it's first two seasons before the actual - and familiar - theme song was written. This choice was perfect because of the rebellious teenage lifestyle the song was the theme for during the 1950's. There are few songs in my opinion, that were recorded in the fifties that sound as full and well produced as today's recordings; however, this one stands up very well. The sax part in particular is really catchy, and I think anyone out there could pick out the guitar solo if that were the only part of the song they heard. It's a simple 12-Bar Blues, but man is it catchy.  If you're interested in the version by Dae, it's posted below for your listening pleasure.
