This is a great patriotic song for America, and it's very fitting for the day. Originally intended to be released on his 2000 album People Like Us, the song didn't make the cut. Initially disappointed, Tippin's opinion of the situation changed late the next year. Talking about why the song didn't make it onto the earlier album, Tippin says, "I know exactly why it didn't. It had a bigger purpose". He headed to the studio to record it in Nashville on September 13, 2001.
The lyrics of the song really are what make it. The indirect references to different symbols of America are my favorite part. The "lady that stands in the harbor for what we believe" and the "bell that echoes the price" to be free are the two that always come to mind, obviously referencing the Statue of Liberty and the Liberty Bell. There were many songs that came out of the tragedy of September 11, but this one was written before that and found its purpose later.
