The band formed under the name Mighty Joe Young in San Diego, California, circa 1985. It wasn't until signing with Atlantic Records and changing their name to STP in 1993. When success did come, it was plentiful. The group was one of the most commercially successful band of the nineties. The current lineup is the same as it has always been with one change. Original singer Scott Weiland was fired from the group in 2013. He was replaced by Linkin Park's Chester Bennington, possibly the worst name for a rock front man ever.

The song is one of the band's biggest hits, taking to top ten on several charts. The song's chord progression was conceived by guitarist Robert DeLeo, based on his love of ragtime music. Weiland is responsible for the lyrics, and says the inspiration is a mix of a newspaper article he had read involving a dead girl found outside San Diego and a metaphor for a failed relationship.
