Roxanne - The Police

Upon its initial release, this song was not a hit. It was written by Sting, and the style was suggested by drummer, Stewart Copeland. Sting had envisioned the song as a bosa nova. After hearing the final song, the group was somewhat indifferent about it, but their soon to be manager, Miles Copeland III, disagreed. He heard a hit, and he signed the band based on it.

The group released the song in the UK, but it failed to chart, as did their next two releases. It wasn't until 1979, two years after writing and recording the song, that it garnered some success. The song was re-released in the U.S. and took the #32 spot on the Hot 100, and the same re-release in the UK turned out a #12 hit for the band. It has become one of the band's signature songs over the years.
