Black Magic Woman - Santana

This is such a funky Latin groove! I love listening to it, and I love playing it. It's a lot of fun trying to imitate/duplicate the Latin instruments (conga, bongo, timbale, etc.) on the drum kit, especially when you're the only percussionist. I tend to turn the snares off on the snare drum, not only giving it a somewhat timbale-like sound, but also giving the rest of a kit a more hollow sound. Without the snares rattling off the vibrations of the other drums, there's a completely different sound you get. I play a cheap, Ludwig Rocker snare drum, so, the metal shell helps with the Latin sounds, too.

While many people only know Santana's version of the song, it was actually a cover. The first version of the song was recorded by Fleetwood Mac after being written by the band's founding member, Peter Green. The song was a major hit for Santana, reaching #4 in the US, while the Fleetwood Mac original never quite hit the radar.
