I'm not really a big fan of Vai's; he's usually a little too out there for me, but man, he can play. I also really like the tone he puts in this song. There are a lot of piano covers of this Charlie Brown classic, and you can find several vocal covers, too. This one is a little different. I like the melody being carried by the guitar. Too often, I hear covers that put the vocals too high, like a child singing it. This works really well for the guitar, though.
The song was originally written by Lee Mendelson and Vince Guaraidi for A Charlie Brown Christmas in 1965. Since Guaraidi's trio released their instrumental version along side the version sung by the choir of St. Pauls's Episcopal Church, many, many artists have taken a shot at the song, including Toni Braxton, Anita Baker, and Chicago.
