Lead singer David Lee Roth was once accused by a journalist of writing songs about nothing but partying, sex, and cars. After learning of the accusation, Roth realized it wasn't true. He had never written a song about a car, and he set out to change that ASAP. "Panama" was the result, written about car he saw in a race named Panama Express.
He was so adament about making sure people knew it was about a car that the engine sound of a car was used in the bridge. Eddie Van Halen, as the story goes, backed his Lamborghini into the studio where the exhaust was miked up. He revved the engine, and that's the sound you hear on the original recording during the bridge.
