When I See You Smile - Bad English

This is the epitome of eighties hair music, especially the hair ballad. You've got all the elements there, the piano riff, heavy guitar solo, acoustic strumming, hammering drums beat, strong, high vocals. The song was on the tail end of the eighties rock craze, being released in 1989. The sound held over a little into the nineties, but it was quickly replaced by a more "alternative" sound.

"Smile" was the band's only #1 in the US, their second single from their debut album, Bad English. The band was comprised of members from Journey and the British group, The Babys. Together, they wrote all but two of the songs from their debut. "Smile" was not one of them. The group followed up Bad English with one other album, Backlash, two years later.
