In a lot of these posts, I don't go with the original recording of a song. I often find covers with twists or different feels or just better recording quality. With this one, I had to use Ruffin's version. It's just the most solid one, and there have been a lot of covers done of this one, including The Temptations. I still pick Ruffin's. There are certain songs that you just can't make better. The song was Ruffin's only Top 10 hit, reaching #7.
We all know that heartache is healed by only one thing: time. The amount of time differs based on the circumstances. How strong was the heartache? How long was the relationship that broke the heart? Was it a betrayal that caused the pain or just a loss of love on one party? Was this relationship all that the person had? All of these factors and many more can play a role in the makeup of a heartache. The idea of not knowing what happens to those broken-hearted fools and imagining them wandering aimlessly in the fog of life is a strong visual, but eventually a lighthouse glows in the distance to guide them out.
Update 07/12/16: About a year or so ago, I discovered Live from Daryl's House, a series of performances recorded at the home of Daryl Hall. The cover of "Broken Hearted" he performs here with Patrick Stump is just as solid as the original, and it's an amazing live performance all around. It was worth coming back and updating the post.
