I honestly prefer the version below to the Raven version. The Oak Ridge boys released the song prior to Raven's. Larry Willoughby, cousin to Rodney Crowell, wrote the song with Janet Willoughby, and Larry was the first to release the song. Larry managed to take his version to #65 on the Hot Country Singles chart. Raven managed to take his version to #9 on the same chart. The Oak Ridge Boys version is a little harder to find info on due to the fact that it was a B-side. They released it under it's original name as did Willoughby: "Heart on the Line (Operator, Operator)."
The Oak Ridge Boys' version of the song was one of the first songs I really fell in love with as a kid. I'm not sure why that is, except the groove is so awesome. Plus, there's that simple horn work in the background of the track, too. The whole concept of the song is completely outdated, though. Obviously, the lyrics are talking about using a payphone to call someone and running out of money to continue the call. We even hear about asking the operator for help. When was the last time you talked to a telephone operator?
