Are You Gonna Be My Girl - Jet

Apparently, there was some debate on the beat of this song when it was released. To me, when you refer to the "beat" of a song, you're talking about the drums. If that's the case, this beat has been used in hundreds of songs over the years. It was suggested that it was stolen from Iggy Pop or White Stripes, though. Well, if that was the case they stole it from someone else, and Iggy tends to agree.

His song "Lust for Life" has the same beat. He says that he and David Bowie stole it from Motown. In my opinion, you can't steal many beats. As a drummer, there are certain grooves and beats that come to mind when you hear a song, and it's hard to think outside the box sometimes, because that's what you've heard your whole life. On the other side of the argument, there are some beats out there that are distinct enough to be blatantly stolen. "Walk This Way", anyone?

The Australian based group released the "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" on their 2003 album, Get Born. The song was received well by fans, and it was a decent hit for the group. The song saw the #3 spot on the Modern Rock Tracks chart, and it was a #29 hit on the Hot 100.
