This was (other than the theme song to "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air") one of the first Smith songs I ever heard. It was one of my favorites right away. He really captures the essence of summer in this one. Everything he mentions, from the family reunions to the car cruising to the "plateau" (and it may not have been called that where we come from, but we all had a place like the one he's talking about), hits home with me for summer. The groove itself just makes me think summer. It seems like no matter what you're doing when listening to this song that it should be in slow motion. I kind of feel like things in summer move in slow motion. It's just the way it is; it moves slower, even though it seems to be over so quickly.
The song was a single, the lead one, actually, from the duo's fourth album, Homebase. The song played well on the carts, hitting #1 on the hip-hop charts and #4 on the Hot 100. At the 1992 Grammy Awards, it took home the award for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The song samples Kool & the Gang's "Summer Madness".
