You Never Even Call Me By My Name - David Allen Coe

I think the best story that can be told about this song is told right in the middle of the tune. It's so often that when you create what you believe to be the perfect version of something, someone else will come along and tell you why it's not perfect. You can either fight against that and be stubborn, or you can take that advice/crticism and work with it. In this case, the writers decided to work with the advice, and I'd say it turned out pretty well.

There was no choice more perefct than Coe to record the song. He was not a fan of the Nashville music machine, and he is definitely considered one of country's outlaws and bad boys. The song is really a message about how music is written and what "needs" to be in a country song, according to the industry. The managed to grab a #8 spot on the Hot Country Singles chart in 1975. Below you can see one of the guys, Steve Goodman, that wrote the song perform it live. He puts a little twist on it.
