You can't always bank on it happening, but sometimes you get great results right on the spot when righting music. This is by far Living Colour's most popular song, and it was written by the group in one rehearsal. It, like a lot of classic, popular songs, was written by mistake. The riff was stumbled upon when trying to work out something completely different. The message of this little paragraph is "go with your instinct" I guess.
Not only was the song a quickly written hit, it was the band's first single. Released in 1988 on their debut album, Vivid, the song fell just short of the Hot 100 Top Ten, reaching #13. It did break through to #9 on the Mainstream Rock charts, though. The song references lots of political and social topics, and the name comes from a psychology concept. Cult of personality refers to a person who uses mass media and propaganda to an image that is heroic and can become idealized by a following, a cult.
