My how an artist's looks can change over time. It's hard to even recognize McGraw with the haircut and mustache he had when this song was released. It was definitely the style of the time, though. So, who can blame him? This isn't a fashion blog, though...
This song was McGraw's first big single, and one of the songs that propelled him to stardom. It was somewhat controversial upon its initial release due to its portrayal of Native Americans. It didn't bother enough of the right people, though, I guess. It got a dance mix and at least a couple music videos, as well. Regardless, it is definitely not one of those songs that covers topics that are sad, at least not in a sad way. Another fun song in the country column!
The middle breakdown of the song is actually a callback to John D. Loudermilk's song: "Indian Reservation". I've posted a video below of Paul Revere and the Raiders performing it.
