Drivin' My Life Away - Eddie Rabbitt

This song has a subject that touches a lot of people's lives, especially from where I live. One of the first few lines makes me think of my own experiences: "those windshield wipers tapping out a tempo." Being a drummer I'm always tapping/drumming on stuff, even in my car. If it's a rare occasion where I'm listening to a song and not singing along, I'll often times find myself watching for when the windshield wipers line up with the beat and how far off from it they are. If there isn't any music at all, I find myself drumming to the beat of the wipers, sometimes even subdividing them in my head. I do the same thing with the clicking turn signal at red lights. It's a problem really; I should probably talk to someone about it, but I digress...

Rabbitt had a string of hits in the seventies and eighties, and "Drivin' My Life Away" came right in the middle of that string. Released in 1980 on the Horizon album, "Drivin'" was a #1 hit on the country chart, and it saw the #5 spot on the Hot 100. Rabbitt wrote the song with Even Stevens, and David Malloy and tells the story of roadies that travel with bands, spending long periods of time away from home. The song was featured on the soundtrack of the 1980 movie, Roadie, starring Meat Loaf and Art Carney.
