The Middle - Jimmy Eat World

This is the band's first #1, and as catchy as it is, it's easy to see why. The song is about the band's rough times in between labels. The lyrics "don't write yourself off, yet" are inspirational words that are meant to go directly toward the band itself. "The Middle" appeared on the album Bleed American, originally released in early 2001.  After the attacks on 9/11, the album name was changed to be self titled.

This song hooked me personally because of the combinations of styles. The guitar solo in the middle is very much influenced by early rock and roll. At the same time, you can hear the pop-punk sound of the day in the chunking rhythm guitar parts. The drums offer something a little different in how they fit around the melody of the chorus. Overall, it's an interesting song, and one that's not easily forgotten.
