Yakety Yak - The Coasters

There are a couple of different versions of this song floating around on YouTube that claim to be the original version. This is it, though. The form of the song doesn't really change, but the mixing and mastering was significantly different. The song was written by the famous writing pair of Leiber and Stoller specifically for The Coasters. Leiber described this song as a "playlet". He coined the term to describe the majority of the music the pair wrote and produced that gave listeners a look into teen life. It's somewhat reminiscent in its feel of a similarly titled song, "Yakety Sax", that I've written about before.

"Yakety Yak" was one of many songs released in the fifties by The Coasters, but it has easily become the most memorable. After its release, the song went to the #1 spot on the R&B charts and stayed there for seven weeks. It also saw the top spot on the Hot 100. Since that time, it has remained popular due to appearances in other areas of pop culture, including Sha Na Na's performance at the original Woodstock festival and a "performance" by Arnold Schwarzenegger in Twins.
