Having a serious dance-rock feel, "Paralyzer" is not very similar to Fiver Eleven's other work. Most of the bands discography is filled with far more alternative rock sounds. The departure was a good idea for the band, though. The song is the band's most successful commercial hit to date, surpassing their first major hit "One Thing." "Paralyzer" was the first single from the band's fifth album, Them vs. You vs. Me.
The song has a throwback sound in parts, sneaking in the main guitar riff from "Moving in Stereo" by The Cars. It also has a similar enough sound to "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand that Finger Eleven would perform part of "Take Me Out" in the middle of "Paralyzer" at live shows on occasion. That mashup would often be combined with parts of "Trampled Under Foot" by Led Zeppelin and "Another Brick in the Wall" by Pink Floyd as a medley.
