This song was orignally recorded by the group Ides of March. They were very similar to Chicago in style, and truly, they're closely related to that band by most people based on the inclusion of a horn section in a rock group. It's not that other groups haven't done something similar to this. Even Guns N' Rose took a horn section with them on at least one tour. The difference is that groups like this based their music around that horn sound, and it still came out like rock music.
Their is one main difference between the two bands: this was the Ides' one hit single, putting them in line with many other one-hit wonders. However, this song was the fastest selling single in Warner Brothers history. As is the case with many big hits, this wasn't supposed to be one. The song was written as a tongue-in-cheek joke.
I like the band's original, but Sammy just makes it so much cooler, as he does with most things. He practically sweats charisma. The key change in the middle of the song is nailed dead on, too. Sammy knew how to perform for sure.
