Brimingham - Shovels & Rope

This is a quirky little duo out of Charleston, SC, making an appearance on Austin City Limits. They sing very well together, and it's definitely something different enough that you won't forget it. That's a big part of making yourself known: you have to have a shtick, even if it's one that happens by accident. Usually, the accidents are the best kind.

I picked this group out for the post mainly because of the instrumentation. I enjoy seeing something different in a group's musical combination. While the idea of drums and guitar only is not a new concept, the drummer's rig is rather peculiar, all the while being perfect for what they're going for in this setting.

Being a drummer myself, I enjoy seeing people try new things with their kits. I personally have the mind set to pick up a double kick pedal for a new idea of my own. Essentially, I want to get the kick drum out of the way of setting up the rest of the kit. It's very traditional for the kick to be placed directly in front of the drummer, but, just guessing, that's a hold over from a time when hardware limited the placement (i.e. rack toms hanging from arms that stem from the kick). I'm willing to try anything once. I had to play a small acoustic type show with my kick drum turned sideways once...why not give something else a shot?
