Sometimes supergroups work, and sometimes they don't. In my opinion, this works OK. I can't imagine a group of singers working together that have more distinct voices from one another...and the rest of the world. The group consisted of Jeff Lynn, Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Roy Orbison, and Tom Petty and recorded two albums, one in 1988 and one in 1990. The latter was completed after Orbison's death.
As the legend goes, Petty's involvement was completely by chance. The others had gotten together at Dylan's home studio, and Harrison had forgotten his guitar. When he went to pick it up at Petty's home, Petty returned with him to the studio. Apparently, everyone was OK with him collaborating with them, too. I can't imagine someone turning him down.
