Hoedown (from "Rodeo") - Aaron Copland

Copland wrote this, the fifth movement from his ballet, Rodeo, in 1942. It was instantly popular, and soon after its release, he composed/extracted the most widely heard version: "Four Dance Episodes from Rodeo." The song gained notoriety with those uninterested in orchestral music in the 1990's during it's run on television commercials for the beef industry. It has become referred to by many as the "beef song." Unfortunately, that moniker still sticks.

There are a lot of people who would take this song on and try to make it their own. There are even fewer people who would succeed if they tried. Bela Fleck and the Flecktones are one of those few. Below is their rendition of the song. Fleck's music draws on all kinds of different styles, shown in the fact that he as received Grammy nominations in more categories - jazz, bluegrass, pop. spoken word, contemporary Christian, gospel, classical, and country - than any other musician. You can see many of these styles and others blend in this strange but awesome collaboration of musicians and instrumentation.
