It's been off and on warm weather in my area for about a month now. We'll have one day that's fifty or sixty degrees, and then, it'll be in the thirties and snowing the next day. It makes me long for the warm days of summer...
I've posted and talked a lot about cover songs and my tendency to be drawn to them. In most cases, songs can be covered in different styles and sound better one way than another, to the extreme that you begin to dislike the lesser version. Gershwin's "Summertime" is not one of those songs, proven by having more covers than almost any other American song: 33,000, each one sounding just a strong as the last.
The song was originally written for the stage production, Porgy and Bess. After it's popularity in the theater, "Summertime" became a much covered jazz standard. As in the video above, you can see one the most popular styles of performance, big band. Even in the original production, you can hear the song several different times in different styles. Below, I've posted a few other versions in other styles, each with their own flavor.
