When I was in middle school and high school, the band director picked this song out of the music library, and either because of his love for the song or out of shear laziness, every group performed it over the course of two years. It started with the middle school bands; I was in seventh grade at the time. Then, the high school concert bands played it, followed by the marching band, and all the other middle school bands, sixth and eighth grades. It was a much simpler arrangement of the song, though, obviously for that level of musicianship.
Actually, the version that most people are familiar with of this song is a simplified version as well. It is the shorter version often set to a quicker tempo to accompany the French dance of the "Cancan". The song and the dance have become so synonymous that the name, the "Cancan", has become a reference to both the song and the dance. I've posted about the following drummer twice, HEREand HERE, and he's really the driving force for this post. He started making videos of drum covers of classical pieces and posting them to YouTube. He has now released an album, accompanied by an orchestra, of his covers. Andrea Vadrucci is a talented drummer with an ear for adding to already standing songs. His take on this piece is below, and you can check out his website for more info, too.
