You Don't Know Me - John Legend & Kelly Clarkson

Theme: Power of Love

I've experienced too many missed opportunities in life to let this song apply to my life at any point in the future, but in my past... I remember one lost chance among many that stands out among the others. I was blind to not notice how she felt sooner, and it wasn't the only time, but even when I found out I didn't act on it like I should have. For that matter, I should've acted on it when I first knew how I felt regardless of being unsure about her. If I had, well, you never know for sure.

This song is all about those chances you don't know. The guy telling the story is talking about someone he knows that he harbors feelings for that are deeper than she knows. He lets her walk right out the door with someone else, foolishly. I'm sure he's convinced himself that it was the best decision for everyone, but he's wrong.

Eddy Arnold and Cindy Walker wrote the song in 1956, and Arnold released it that year. His version didn't do well on the charts; it actually didn't make it at all. Jerry Vale's version was the first to do that. The most well-known version is that of Ray Charles. You can hear it below. I first heard the song when watching Groundhog Day, and I've been in love with it since. That clip is at the very bottom of the post.
