You Give Love a Bad Name - Blake Lewis

Theme: Power of Love

So, I first heard this song back when I watched "American Idol". Lewis was on in the sixth season of the show. I have no idea what season they're on now, but I haven't watched in at least four or five years, I think. Anyway...

Lewis was a good vocalist and beatboxer. He usually included both in his performances. This song was no different. He actually does a "drum battle" with the shows drummer who is front and center with him during the live performance (see below). I was most impressed with his sound effects that open the song, though.

The original cut was by Bon Jovi, of course. It was a #1 hit for the group in 1986, their first. The song is about a woman who has done her lover wrong and gives love a "bad name". Written by Jon Bon Jovi, Desmond Child, and Richie Sambora, many people mislabel the song with the title, "Shot Through the Heart". That wouldn't matter much, but the band actually had an earlier, unrelated song by that title.

I like the original, a lot. I find the spin that Lewis puts on the feel of the first verse and chorus spice things up a little, though. If I didn't have the original for comparison, I wonder if I'd feel the same. Lewis, or someone producing the record, decided it best to pick up the pace of the rest of the song, and make it more in tune with the original. Good move!

Lewis also had another performance that fits right into this month's theme that I liked. The video below was in the early weeks of the show when he had to group up with other performers. They chose to do the Bee Gees', "How Deep Is Your Love".
