This tune was originally performed by Ian Hunter. It was released on his '79 album, You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic. Hunter claims that the inspiration for the song comes from his desire to refute the poor reputation of Cleveland at the time. He says that NYC and LA were represented as cool towns, but Cleveland always got a lot of crap for some reason. The song has been used for years as the city's unofficial anthem. It is also often played after victories of the city's sports teams.
The version used for the theme song for The Drew Carey Show was recorded by The Presidents of the United States of America. It's got a little bit of an edgier feel over the original in my opinion. During the final season of the show, the theme was performed in a different style for each episode, and it is covered by Trans-Siberian Orchestra anytime they play a Cleveland venue.
