The original version of this song was performed by Tears for Fears and was the bands first international hit. Being based in the UK, the band had some success there, but this song hit the Top 40 charts in several countries. The original was a bit more up-tempo, and for me, it was a little more difficult to take seriously, especially in comparison to this cover, which has a far more somber tone.
Jules's version of the song was recorded for the soundtrack to Donnie Darko. It was also used in Gears of War. Its minimalist sound fits both of those uses very well, the crazy world in which Darko's main character finds himself and the dystopian future of the Gears series of video games. It has a much more ominous and haunting sound to it than that of the Tears for Fears version.
