Warning: I should warn you that this post is really just an excuse to write about The Monster Squad.
First, a personal anecdote. There was a video store that was close to my house when I was younger. For those of you too young to know, a video store is a place where we used to go to rent videos (which was a thing before DVDs...which was a thing before bluray...which was a thing before you could just press a button and have movies streamed directly to your TV via the internet, which, coincidentally didn't really exist for most of us at the time) in order to watch them at home. It closed down due to poor business long before the death of the video rental industry.
When it went out of business, it had a massive sale on its existing inventory. I purchased several N64 and Sega Genesis titles, as well as a huge number of VHS tapes. A copy of the film shown in the montage above was one of those tapes. It wasn't until several years later when I was living on my own that I discovered what a cult classic this movie was and that the value of the tape I had was pretty crazy. Copies of it were selling for hundreds of dollars online; it wasn't released on DVD until 2007.
After the DVD release, the price of the film on VHS plummeted, and I still have mine, because I didn't sell it for a ridiculous price when I had the chance. It still goes for a decent amount considering what most VHS tapes go for nowadays. You can find used copies on Amazon going for $15.00.
Now, then, the song! The song was...well...there's very little information readily available about it online. However, the artist apparently spent a significant portion of his career working on music for movie soundtracks. He's had songs on soundtracks for several films, including Cocoon, Gremlins, and Independence Day. A song from his very first album, Bossa Nova Hotel, was chosen for the movie Flashdance.
On a final note, if you haven't seen this movie and are a fan of monster movies, eighties movies, or coming of age stories, a la The Goonies, you need to check this one out soon. Just remember, "Be Kind, Please Rewind".
