Matlock Theme - Dick DeBenedictis

I've written several times about how specific music can link to times in your life, and when you hear that music again, it's like you're taken right back to that same old place. I don't know if it's the same for everyone else, but TV themes seem to have an stronger effect on my nostalgia than any other music. It's possible that it comes out of the fact that not only the song, but the show itself brings back memories. My grandpa used to watch Matlock, and when I hear this theme I think of times spent at my grandparents' house. I tried to watch an episode or two a few months ago, and I think I'll have to try again in another twenty years or so.

The theme song was written by Dick DeBenedictis. He's responsible for several TV themes, including Diagnosis Murder and Jake and the Fatman. These compositions came from ties he had to the creators of Matlock, since both of the other shows resulted as spinoffs from it. Jake and the Fatman was a direct spinoff of Matlock, while Diagnosis Murder spun off from Jake.
