While we're on the topic of popular B-sides, let's use another example I listed in yesterday's entry. "Roadhouse Blues" was B-side for "You Make Me Real" and became a #50 hit. While it wasn't the band's best-performing song, it was performed often, quickly becoming a concert staple for them.
One of the more fascinating points of the group itself is the lack of a bass player. The group was made up of four members, vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, drummer John Desnmore, and guitarist Robby Krieger. The group filled in the bottom end of the music where the bass was missing by having Manzarek, a very talented player, cover most of the bass line parts on his left hand.
The bass, more than anything, is the foundation of the music in my opinion. I have done gigs before without a bassist, but especially as a drummer, I find it hard to fill (or feel) the groove as well sans bass player. It doesn't matter what kind of music you're listening to, bluegrass to metal to rap to classical, there's always a bass line there. It's impressive the group accomplished what they did without a member devoted to providing that part.
