Where Everybody Knows Your Name - Gary Portnoy

Over the last couple of years I've tried to rewatch some of the shows I grew up watching. Some of them still hold up pretty well, MacGuyver, Law & Order, even The Andy Griffith Show, which was of course in reruns by the time I was around. On the other hand, some of them don't hold up so well, ::AHEM:: Knight Rider. I'm glad that Cheers falls into the former of these two categories.

I've been watching it off and on for a few weeks know, and despite how corny and slightly over-the-top it can be at times (the idea that all of the things that happen in this bar actually happen there is in no way believable), I really enjoy the show. When I was old enough to start watching, Coach had left the show with the failing health and death of the actor that portrayed him, Nicholas Colasanto. I was far more familiar with his replacement, Woody, portrayed by Woody Harrelson.

Watching them now, I'm really enjoying the earlier episodes of the series. I like to see the characters develop, and I really enjoyed seeing the introduction of Frazier Crane (Kelsey Grammar), having enjoyed Frazier for a long time, too. The series lasted for eleven seasons and ended when Ted Danson decided not to renew his contract as Sam Malone.

The theme song was written by Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo. The shortened version that is used for the opening of the show originally had different lyrics. Those lyrics never made it into the extended version of the song, one which Portnoy released as a single and appeared during the opening of the 200th episode, but I think they fit the show well. I think the lyrics that were recorded were able to impact a larger audience, though. You can read the original lyrics below, and hear the full length single under that. Oddly enough, the next single Portnoy released was "Every Time I Turn Around," the theme from The Punky Brewster Show.

Original Lyrics:
Singing the blues when the Red Sox lose
It's a crisis in your life
On the run 'cause all your girlfriends
Wanna be your wife
And the laundry ticket's in the wash
