Soul Thing - Taylor Hicks

I'm not sure what happened to tail spin all the hate that Hicks received after his win on American Idol. I enjoyed his performances and attitude on the show, and I really enjoyed his first album. On the other hand, he had dropped below the radar enough by the time his second release was available that I didn't even know he had one. There's a lot of rumors about his fight with the label to record his own music instead of what they wanted him to record, and I can relate to that, but at the same time, being a "yes" man for a while might have taken him where he wanted to be later.

His freshman release was packed with exactly what you'd expect from him. It had lots of soul, lots of horns, and lots of groove. The song above has a few twists and turns in it I like. This live version is structured a little differently than the CD version, but it still has most of the same pieces. I'm not a fan of the ending, though, sticking in a bit of "East Bound and Down" by Jerry Reed feels forced. It just doesn't work, but I get what he was trying to do.
