This song is a lot of fun, but it also teaches a pretty good lesson: there's always a bigger fish. It doesn't matter how good you are at something or how strong you are or how much you think you have, someone is always waiting to show you that you're wrong. In this song, we learn that Jim is the most respected, or really feared, maybe, guy in the place. Then, along comes Willie who stabs and shoots Jim to death after being hustled by him. Now, Willie is the top of the heap. This song also contains one of my favorite lines, "you don't tug on Superman's cape."
The song was Croce's first single, and it climbed all the way to #8. He followed it later with "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown." That song was an almost identical tale of a man who fell from his throne as being the best. Croce would release eleven singles altogether, taking "Leroy Brown" and "Time in a Bottle" both all the way to #1.
