Update 04/04/17: The video I originally used for this post is no longer available, and this is the best quality of a live performance I can find.
The far more popular single from Nichols album Man with a Memory, on which this post's song was released, was the track "Brokenheartsville". It made it all the way to #1 on the country charts. "Cool" only managed to climb its way to #18. I like both songs, but I prefer "Cool" slightly more. All the reasons I like the song disappeared in the live version posted above, though.
The song originally had a sort of country shuffle feel with a little bit of Cajun flavor. It was very old school country when it came down to the groove, slightly western swing. The things that really captivated me were the parts that made it different from most tunes you heard on the radio at the time. The banjo, guitar, and accordion parts gave it a kind of Louisiana swamp feel, that hint of the bayou. What I do like about the live version is the quick cross into the classic ZZ Top song, as well as playing around with some other classic tunes from the rock genre.
So you know what it sounds like, the original is posted below.
