OK, rolling off the topic of yesterday's post dealing with over-production, I decided to hit the issue head on with a recent huge hit from country duo Florida Georgia Line. I put up the live version below for comparison.
Just listening to the intro and verse of the song, I can hear the usual layers, drums, guitar, bass, vocals and acoustic guitar. Underneath all of that, I can hear at least two other guitar tracks, a steel guitar track and a banjo track. That's crazy! Now, if you listen to the live version, the band compensates by cranking up the bass and giving the guitar a little extra power. It works, but why put all the extra stuff in the mix to begin with? Why not present your listeners with music that you can actually perform for them live without hiring a dozen auxiliary players?

And then, follow it up with a rap vocal track mixed in...
