I totally came by this performance on accident. I like the song, though, but even more than that, I was attracted by the African instrument, similar to a fiddle being played. I had to dig into what it was called. I began with asking my musician friends on Facebook what the name of the instrument was, and I did a little research from there.
The instrument is call a ritti. After doing a little searching on the internet, I found very little about the instrument, and Google kept suggesting "rite" or "rift" to replace the word. I did find a page on WordNik that had a few examples, but even it didn't have a definition. I did get some info from friends, though.
The riti is a single-stringed instrument, most similar to the common violin. Its body is usually constructed of wood, and....that's where the info ends. To be honest, I'm not nearly as interested in the instrument's construction or history as I am in the fact that the man playing it can be so creative with one string.
