The One That Got Away - The Civil Wars

 [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MnkM_ebv9BI]

This tune is a little too laid back to go on a regular listening playlist of mine, but I do like it for the right mood. It's haunting, which is one of my favorite musical qualities. It's got a great male-female vocal sound. It also takes a common phrase and turns it on its head a bit. The idea of wishing that someone was the one who got away is different. It seems like I've written about this topic before...

People usually wish the one who got away hadn't. This song, to me on first listen, is about a couple that stayed together, but things didn't turn out like they wanted. Looking back at the beginning of the relationship, they were happy, and they wish it had ended then. That way, they'd only have those good memories from the beginning.

The duo of Joy Williams and John Paul White won two Grammy Awards in 2012, Best County Duo/Group Performance and Best Folk Album. After having met in Nashville, in 2008, the two singer-songwriters released a four song demo followed by a full-length album entitled Barton Hollow.
