Silly Symphony Skeleton Dance - Carl Stalling

October Theme: Disney

Silly Symphonies was first produced by Walt Disney Productions in 1929. Between '29 and '39, they produced seventy-five of the animated films. Though the series didn't feature regularly returning characters, it did have some very recognizable Disney faces, including Pluto (for the first time without Mickey Mouse) and Donald Duck, who made his first appearance in this series. Even though this isn't one of my favorite pieces of Disney music, I have respect for its place in setting the foundation of what was to come. Plus it's a nice combination of this month's theme and my previous October themes, Halloween.

The Symphonies also had a major influence on the direction Disney followed. Before making Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney used The Golden Touch, a Silly Symphony based on the classic King Midas story, as a way to try out his hand at directing. Many people, including Walt, thought that the short was slow paced and stiff. Due to this realization, Walt decided to produce and oversee creativity in the making of his full-length, animated feature instead of directing it.
