Gravity - John Mayer

Oh, how I hate to watch his face while be plays, but what a sweet sound that axe makes. John Mayer is by far one of the best guitarists of this generation. As far as I'm concerned, he has earned a place in the ranks with artists like Slash, Eddie Van Halen, Joe Walsh, and BB King. I don't think, even if you don't like his music, there are many people that are true music lovers that would dispute that. This is by far one of my favorite songs of his. I wish that I could bottle the smooth sounds of this tune and open it up any time I'm in a bad mood or a funk.

The way this song rolls off Mayer's fingers is ridiculous. I don't think you hear the bass player pluck one note he plays them so smoothly. The organ feels like it floats in from nowhere. The drums have a minimalist quality I can't even begin to explain. The most important thing though is the way all of these parts are melded and crafted together. This is possibly the smoothest song he's ever performed.

The song was released on his 2006 album, Continuumand Mayer believes in it in a strong way. Speaking about the song's significance and meaning, he said, "This is the most important song I've ever written; it's a time capsule song. I will listen to it every day of my life if I need to. It's honest to God the most important song I've ever written in my life." He has also commented that it's the song he's always been trying to write, as far back as "Come Back to Bed" from his earlier album, Heavier Things.
