Layla (Unplugged) - Eric Clapton

The original cut of this song is good. The live version from his more recent tours (One More Car, One More Rider for example) is great. This unplugged version is the best version in my opinion. This slow, smokey blues version really gives the song more emotion. It's how I think he probably felt when he wrote it. He was, after all, writing about a woman he couldn't have.

Clapton wrote numerous songs about his romantic feelings toward Pattie Boyd who was married to his best friend, George Harrison. This is my favorite of those songs. Some of the greatest artists in history are driven to create some of their best work out of pain. This song, along with "Wonderful Tonight", "Tears in Heaven" and "Change the World" were all written out of pain. I think they are all some of his best.
