Mess Around - Ray Charles

This song shows a different style for Charles. It's not like many of his other songs, and it just books along great. The piano style blend with the horns and the lyrics fit in just right. It's probably one of my top five favorite Ray Charles tunes. The song was a big hit for Charles at a time when he was trying to stand apart from his contemporaries. It was written by Atlantic Records president Ahmet Ertegun.

If you haven't seen the movie about Ray Charles' life: Ray, WATCH IT.  Jamie Foxx does a great job of capturing the character of Charles. One of my favorite scenes is where his Ertegun, played by Curtis Armstrong, comes in to tell Ray he needs a new sound and pitches him the song. You can watch that clip below and get a good feel for the movie and Foxx's portrayal of Ray.
