Update Note: The original video I used for this post has been taken down, and you cannot find any good quality video of this song on YouTube or anywhere else online really. The Eagles music isn't available like that. So, this is the best I could find to replace it. I suggest just getting your hands on a copy.
Update Two: I recently started watching The West Wing, and during season two, the opening of this song plays over the beginning of episode sixteen. The main melodic theme of the song is then used over and over throughout the episode as the main background music. It's a great show that's cleverly written and deals with a lot of hot-button issues of the time; many that still have a large impact today. The episode was titled, "Somebody's Going to Emergency, Somebody's Going to Jail," in reference to a line from the song.
Just like Don Henley says before they start playing: this is a song about appreciating what you have. I was really tempted to put up one of The Eagles' older hits here, and I'm sure I will in the future, but I really, really like this song. If you haven't seen the Hell Freezes Over DVD, I highly recommend it. It's got some of their older tunes, but you get to hear some new stuff as well.
The thing that really hooked me on this song when I first heard it was that muted trumpet solo in the middle. It's just so smooth. It fits the song so well. What instrument is better suited to help tell the story of a guy that loses everything than an almost silenced brass instrument that is usually one of the loudest in the group. The lyrics tell a great story and the music lines up great. The bass line is really intriquite in parts and the strings bring a real classical touch to the song while we get a real blues essence from the piano and Henley's vocals.
