China Grove - The Doobie Brothers

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aX0XnuVqY7I]

Update: The version I originally used for this has been removed from YouTube, but this is the audio of that performance. If you can find the Lve at Wolf Trap version, I suggest watching the entire concert.

Songs today just don't have hooks like they used to.  This song gets you right from the beginning with an awesome guitar riff.  It's a hook that you can really get on board with right from the beginning. This version kicks a little bit of a groove before the main riff comes into play, but that just makes it hit harder. The horn section is a great addition to the live performance, too, and I love to hear the two drummers playing so well together.

The song grew out of the bridge that was written by Bill Payne, songwriter and founding member of Little Feat. The bridge talks about "the sheriff and his buddies and their samurai swords", which started spinning the tale of the rest of the song. The only factual part of the song is that China Grove is a real town in Texas. The rest of the song is a fictional story that makes it sound like China Grove is a Chinatown kind of place. Oddly enough, samurai are Japanese, not Chinese.
