This song is just a fun tune about being different, and anybody that listens to or knows anything about Mraz will say that that's subject he has a firm grip on: different. He has a strange blend of alt-rock, hip-hop, and pop. His lyrics are always clever, and he tends to delve into topics that most people wouldn't. This was the first song of his that I heard, at least knowingly, and I've been a fan ever since. He does manage to hit main stream pretty well, just not often. Songs like "Wordplay" and "I'm Yours" are ones that most people would know, but as with a lot of artists, his lesser known songs are some of the better ones. This song in particular has a cool danceable beat mixed with an acoustic guitar groove that just works.
Mraz's release of the song wasn't all that popular. It only climbed up to to #36 on the pop charts and performed slightly better on the adult pop charts. In 2007, the song got a boost from a TV show. During the 2007 season of American Idol, contestant Chris Richardson performed the song, giving it a much wider audience than it had previously garnered. Sales of Mraz's original take began to increase on iTunes, and the song hit #22 on the iTunes music store.
